There are a number of simple and relatively inexpensive steps companies can take to increase the chances of stopping counterfeit goods entering their largest markets.
Countries in the European Union and the USA are usually the largest markets for most companies. Both the EU and US customs authorities have a system whereby you can register your trademark with them. As part of the registration you explain how they can identify whether goods containing your brand are counterfeit. It might be you use plastic ties rather than string for your labels, or a particular product should only be in red. Use of product authentication technology should be considered to aid identification.
We can support your registration with training of customs officials at key entry points such as Heathrow and Felixstowe or exit points such as Shanghai to increase awareness of your brand and how to detect it is counterfeit.
Please note to use this customs registration service in the EU you only need an EU trademark application but in the US and China your trademark must already be registered. We provide trademark application services for these countries so please contact us for help with this.
